It’s hard to believe that it was almost 100 years ago that Washington D.C. held its first bathing beach costume contest! On June 5th, 1921, the Washington D.C. Recreation Department held their very first bathing beach costume contest at the Tidal Basin. Hundreds of people came out to witness the spectacle as women of all ages and sizes dressed up in their best bathing beach costumes. From the simple to the outrageous, the costumes ranged from traditional sailor outfits to full-on mermaid ensembles. After a long day of judging, the winners were awarded with prizes and certificates of achievement. It was a fun and exciting event that left a lasting impression on the city.
