It’s hard to believe that it was almost 100 years ago that Washington D.C. held its first bathing beach costume contest! On June 5th, 1921, the Washington D.C. Recreation Department held their very first bathing beach costume contest at the Tidal Basin. Hundreds of people came out to witness the spectacle as women of all ages and sizes dressed up in their best bathing beach costumes. From the simple to the outrageous, the costumes ranged from traditional sailor outfits to full-on mermaid ensembles. In 1904, rat catchers were a common sight in the sewers of Europe. These professional pest exterminators were paid for each rat they killed, with some earning upwards of a few hundred dollars a month. One such rat catcher was a German man by the name of Auguste Boch.
