In 1965, the Baltimore Social Security Office employed workers to manually enter data into computers using a keypunch machine. Keypunch machines enabled data to be inputted into computers by punching holes into cards. These cards were then read into the computers, creating a digital record of the information. The use of keypunch machines was a laborious process and required a great deal of accuracy and attention to detail.
