On September 28, 1928, American aviation pioneer and writer, Amelia Earhart, arrived in Chicago, Illinois. Earhart was an advocate for women’s rights and an advocate for aviation. This visit to the Windy City was part of her mission to promote the cause of female pilots and aviation in general. On July 2, 1953, a remarkable sight was seen on the Chicago River – the 600-foot-long, 70-foot-wide Marine Angel, the largest vessel to ever transit the river at that time.
