On August 6th, 1926, Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, making history in the process. The American swimmer completed the feat in a remarkable 14 hours and 31 minutes, besting the previous record — held by a man — of nearly 20 hours.
Ederle endured treacherous conditions throughout the swim, facing strong winds and waves, as well as jellyfish stings. Yet, she persevered, and was greeted by an estimated 2 million people in England upon her arrival.
Gertrude Ederle’s accomplishment was a remarkable one, and her courage and perseverance are an inspiration to all.
