The Hoover dam under construction in 1934.

The Hoover Dam, a marvel of engineering, was constructed between 1931 and 1936. Located on the Colorado River, the dam was built to control flooding, provide irrigation water, and generate hydroelectric power. In 1934, the project was still under construction, but the massive scale of the project was already becoming apparent. The dam is an impressive 726 feet tall and 1,244 feet long, making it the tallest dam in the United States at the time of its completion.

Construction of the dam was a massive undertaking and required over 5,000 workers and millions of dollars. The project was so ambitious that it was seen as a symbol of the nation’s recovery from the Great Depression. The dam was completed in 1936 and is still in operation today, providing a source of renewable energy for the southwest.
